Paul Pei Jen Hau, also transliterated as Hou Beiren, was born in 1917 in Liaoning, China. He studied abroad in Japan in 1939. During his early years, he studied painting under Li Zhongchang. He later took instruction from Huang Binhong and Zheng Shiqiao. In 1956, he moved to the United States via Hong Kong. In 1979, he established the American Society for the Advancement of Chinese Art (ASACA) and is the Permanent Honorary Chairman. His work, has been exhibited in and collected by major museums and universities in the United States. The United Nations agency UNESCO also arranged a solo exhibition for him. In 1984, he held a tremendously successful solo exhibition in the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. His use of rich, bold and saturated colors, his unrestrained and hearty style struck a chord in many viewers. From 2008, he held a series of exhibitions and seminars starting at the Shenzhen Fine Arts Museum, followed by the Nanjing Museum, the National Art Museum of China in Beijing, the Shanghai Liu Haisu Fine Arts Museum in 2009, and the Liaoning Provincial Museum in 2010. At these events his unique style and his breakthrough achievement in the field of Chinese art was affirmed. In May of 2010, he was honored along with Zhu Qizhan in the Century Meeting of Writing Brush, a special exhibition in Shanghai. After the Fifty Year Retrospective at the Pacific Art League in Palo Alto in 2011, Mr. Houalso had solo exhibitions at the Silicon Valley Asian Art Center (2011), Anhui Hefei Yaming Museum (2011), Fujian Art Museum (2012), and the Zhejiang Art Museum (2013). In 2002, Hou donated 300 pieces of his lifes work and rare collections of past masters such as Zhang Daqian, Fu Baoshi, Zhu Qizhan, and Huang Binhong to the City of Kunshan, Jiangsu Province. The People's Government of Kunshan City built a Museum in his name to house and to exhibit these precious artwork.
